Nature Retracts Room-Temperature Superconductor Discovery

Nature is a highly respected scientific publishing journal that retracted a paper in March claiming the discovery of a superconductor working at everyday temperatures. This is the second superconductor paper involving Ranga P. Dias from the University of Rochester to be retracted by the journal in just over a year. The retraction raised questions for Nature about why it was publicized after the scrutiny and retraction of an earlier paper by the same group. Despite allegations of research misconduct, Professor Dias intends to resubmit the paper to a journal with more independent editorial processes. Superconductors have been a topic of research for over a century and have properties that can seem almost magical. The retraction of Dias’s paper has brought validation to critics and discomfort to the scientists involved. An investigation is in progress at the University of Rochester due to these issues.
