Democrats Express Deep Anxiety as Polls Show Biden Trailing Trump

White House officials dismissed recent polling showing President Biden trailing former President Donald J. Trump in key swing states. The polling from The New York Times and Siena College revealed that Biden was losing to Trump in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. However, Biden’s team emphasized that there is still a year to campaign, and historical data has shown that polls taken a year ahead of time are not always accurate. Democrats, on the other hand, are expressing concerns about Biden’s chances in 2024. Democratic strategist David Axelrod stated that the polling results would create doubt within the party and questioned whether Biden should continue running. Other Democrats, like Senator Richard Blumenthal and Donna Brazile, also expressed concerns but urged Democrats to focus on mobilizing their coalition for the upcoming race. Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, stressed the importance of showing strength among key parts of Biden’s coalition to secure a victory. The campaign has started pilot programs in Arizona and Wisconsin to bolster support among specific voter groups. Despite the current polling, Biden’s campaign remains confident that the numbers will shift once they can utilize their campaign funds and launch targeted attacks against Trump or another Republican candidate. Democratic strategist Axelrod believes that Biden is further behind now than Obama was in 2011 but still expects him to run for re-election. He urges Biden and his team to quickly adopt a competitive strategy and began attacking Trump politically to highlight the implications of a Trump victory in 2024.
