After Hamas Attack, U.S. to Send Weapons and Warships to Support Israel

The Pentagon made an announcement on Sunday that it will provide additional munitions to Israel and move Navy warships closer to the country as a show of support. This decision comes after Palestinian militants launched a major invasion of Israeli territory. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III stated that he has ordered the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford and five guided-missile cruisers and destroyers to the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea near Israel. The United States will also increase the number of Air Force fighter jets and attack planes in the region. These actions are meant to strengthen regional deterrence efforts and demonstrate the United States’ support for Israel. President Biden reassured Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel that military assistance is on the way and more will follow. The Biden administration wants to reassure Israelis of the U.S.’ commitment to their security and show resolve to Hamas and other adversaries in the region. The U.S. intends to deter Iran, Syria, and any other country or militant group from joining the conflict. The deployment of additional forces is also aimed at protecting American interests in the region. The Biden administration plans to provide the Israeli armed forces with additional equipment and resources, including munitions. Specific weapons systems were not disclosed, but experts believe that Israel may request more interceptors for its Iron Dome missile defense system, as well as bombs and missiles for attack planes. The U.S. is also working on plans to evacuate thousands of Americans from Israel if necessary. The U.S. already provides over $3 billion in military assistance to Israel each year, and the Pentagon has stockpiles of arms and ammunition worth about $2 billion in Israel.
