At least 21 individuals have tragically lost their lives after a coach plummeted 30 meters from an overpass and caught fire near Venice in northern Italy. The crash occurred on Tuesday evening, with Italian police confirming that there were tourists from different nationalities aboard the coach. Among the 18 injured individuals were individuals from Ukraine, Germany, Spain, Austria, and France, as confirmed by the Venezia police to Sky News. It has been reported that there were at least two children among those who perished in the accident. The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, stated that several of the victims were foreigners, with Ukrainian passports being discovered. The British embassy to Italy stated that they are currently unaware whether any UK passengers were present on the coach. Alberto Rizzotto, the driver of the vehicle, also lost his life in the crash. The mayor has termed it a “terrible tragedy,” calling for the city to mourn the loss of the victims. The crash occurred in the Mestre district, and the cause of the accident is still unknown. The region’s governor, Luca Zaia, mentioned that the coach was new and electric, and the particular street did not have any noticeable issues. Rescue operations are still ongoing, and the death toll may rise. The crash site has now been cleared, and traffic in the area has resumed. Italy has sadly experienced numerous fatal bus accidents in recent years.
