Offshore wind power warning as government auction flops | Business News

Energy industry leaders have expressed concerns that the UK may not achieve its target for new offshore wind power due to a lack of interest in a government auction. The auction, the results of which are expected to be announced on Friday, has struggled to attract bidders because the maximum price generators can receive is considered too low. Rising costs in manufacturing and installing turbines, including increased steel prices and supply chain pressures, have made the auction unappealing to potential bidders. Companies, including SSE, have ruled themselves out, leading to expectations of very few participating bidders. The auction is part of the government’s annual process to incentivize private sector investment in power sources through contracts for difference (CfDs).
