Hawaii wildfires: At least six people dead after flames destroy large parts of town in Maui | World News

At least six individuals have lost their lives as wildfires continue to rage through parts of Maui, Hawaii. The fires in Lahaina, West Maui, have been fueled by strong winds and have resulted in the evacuation of 13 areas. Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. stated that their main priority is to save lives. Acting governor Sylvia Luke has declared a state of emergency and advised against travel to the island, emphasizing that it is not a safe place to be. Despite some relief in wind conditions, aerial flights have shown the extent of the devastation, with homes, businesses, and boats scorched and rubble piled high. Famous musician Mick Fleetwood confirmed that his restaurant, Fleetwood’s on Front Street, has been lost, but he expressed concern for the safety of his staff. Three individuals suffered critical burns and were forced to jump into the ocean to escape the flames. The Coast Guard and emergency services were able to rescue 12 people from the water. More patients have been taken to the local hospital, and Hawaii Governor Josh Green anticipates further loss of life due to the widespread fires. The town of Lahaina, known for its historic buildings, has been severely affected, and the roads have been closed except for emergency personnel. Over 2,100 individuals have sought shelter in four designated locations. The main airport in Maui is housing 2,000 passengers whose flights have been canceled or who have recently arrived on the island. Hurricane Dora passing south of the island has contributed to the high winds, causing power outages and disruptions to transportation. However, flights have resumed as the winds have subsided. The Big Island of Hawaii has also experienced fires, but no injuries or damage to homes have been reported so far.
