Sinead O’Connor funeral: Thousands line streets of Bray as singer is laid to rest | Ents & Arts News

Sinead O’Connor, who was known as both a singer and activist, was honored at her funeral with the presence of stars such as Bono from U2 and Bob Geldof. Thousands of mourners lined the streets to pay their respects. The funeral procession passed by her former home in Bray, Co Wicklow, Ireland, to allow fans to say their goodbyes. As the hearse carrying O’Connor’s coffin moved along the seafront, fans applauded and cheered, throwing flowers onto the car. A camper van with the Pride flag and the Rastafarian flag played her music as it followed the procession. It was a private ceremony attended by Ireland’s president Michael Higgins, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Bono, and Geldof. The service included Muslim prayers led by Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri, an Islamic scholar who met O’Connor in 2018 when she announced her conversion to Islam. In his eulogy, Dr Umar Al-Qadri described O’Connor’s voice as moving and her words resonating with listeners, touching their hearts. He also highlighted her ability to bring joy through her music. Fans gathered in Bray early in the morning to wait for O’Connor’s funeral procession to pass by. Neon signs with beloved lyrics and colorful bouquets paid tribute to her and her championing of diversity. Handwritten letters expressed gratitude for the solace and strength her songs provided. O’Connor’s former home, which she sold in 2021, has become a site where people have been leaving flowers and paying their respects. The Grammy-winning artist, aged 56, was found unresponsive in her home in southeast London on July 26th.
